A recent two-day camp in Dibra Valley, Albania, organised by the Group of Rural Activists of Dibra-GARD, brought together young people, activists, and individuals from various backgrounds for a memorable adventure while raising awareness about the Skavica Dam hydropower project. Participants had the opportunity to explore some of Dibra's most stunning natural sites, including the Gjalica Mountain, the breathtaking Setë Canyons, and the majestic Sopanika Waterfall. This journey showcased Dibra's exceptional potential for natural tourism and highlighted the region's unique beauty.

The camp's activities extended beyond exploration, with engaging workshops and discussions on critical topics like the Skavica Dam issue. Activists from Dibra and beyond shared their daily struggles, providing participants with a comprehensive view of the Skavica Dam controversy. The discussions covered the reasons for opposition and the potential negative impacts, emphasising how the natural beauty enjoyed during the camp would be at risk if the dam were constructed.

The Skavica hydropower project threatens to build a massive dam in a pristine gorge near Skavica village, within the municipality of Kukës. This dam would create a huge reservoir impacting up to 15,138 hectares of land, including agricultural fields, forests, and 41 villages. Thousands of people could be displaced, making Skavica one of the most socially devastating dams in Europe in the 21st century. However, the environmental and social impact assessment is still pending.

The primary aim of the camp was to recognise the dangers of building Skavica Dam, promote a natural Dibra, and highlight the region's vast potential. It also sought to create a bridge of cooperation between young people and local residents with others from different districts. The camp organizers believe that every resident in Albania should be aware of the Skavica case and its negative effects. Through this and other activities, they aim to bring much more awareness among Albanians about the Skavica case.

This collaborative effort successfully raised awareness about the critical issues at hand and ensured the message was widely shared. It strengthened support for the cause against the Skavica Dam within the region and beyond, emphasizing the need to protect Dibra's natural wonders and communities.
