ReForest Vjosa Report 2024–2026

This field report outlines a comprehensive reforestation and restoration strategy for the Vjosa River basin in Albania, developed to address severe deforestation by revitalising the Vjosa Wild River National Park’s ecosystem. The report reviews the planning, function and lessons learned from seven key pilot areas along the river’s shores and floodplains.

Because native planting material is largely unavailable on the commercial market, the initiative establishes localised tree nurseries, such as the one inaugurated in Tepelena, where trees are cultivated from regional mother plants before being replanted.

By involving local communities and schools, the project aims to reinstate natural ecological balance, enhance biodiversity, and safeguard the long-term stability of one of Europe’s last wild rivers.
