In October 2013 the NGOs Riverwatch and EuroNatur started an international campaign for better protection of the most pristine and valuable rivers of the Balkan Peninsula against hydropower development with support from several partner NGOs in South Eastern Europe.
One of our key areas is the Sava River, which has been under high anthropogenic pressure. The middle section is currently threatened by additional hydropower dams and the ‘Zagreb on Sava’ project, while the planned navigation class upgrade would have fatal impacts on the lower section between Sisak and Beograd. The international coordination team is in a partnership with the Croatian Society for Bird and Nature Protection for the protection of the Croatian Sava. To supplement the Team Sava, the coordination team is currently looking for a national coordinator for Croatia and countries downstream (Bosnia&Herzegovina and Serbia)
